An Eagle Eye View on Rising Unemployment Levels

A recent Briefing Paper issued by the House of Commons Library shows that youth unemployment is on the rise again (Youth Unemployment Statistics Standard Note SN/EP/5871 20th March 2013). Eagle Consulting believe all businesses should be actively supporting the country's economic recovery and that one way to do this is to offer genuine, valuable employment opportunities to young people.

People often think of the Highlands as a lovely place to visit, but for some reason they don't consider the area as somewhere they might live and work.

Eagle Consulting has enjoyed steady, consistent growth over the last twenty years, and has even been able to maintain that growth through the recent difficult years of recession. In fact, their biggest challenge is finding suitable candidates to fill the increasing number of positions they have available. In light of recent media coverage telling us that unemployment levels, and in particular youth unemployment, are on the rise again, this seems extraordinary.

Like many modern businesses, Eagle Consulting know that their employees are their only asset, and as such they take good care of them. They value individuality and work to everyone’s strengths, abilities and ambitions. They offer excellent employee benefits, including generous holiday entitlement, a quarterly bonus scheme, a relocation package and comprehensive training agreements to support their trainees through to becoming qualified accountants, including additional study leave, payment of fees and costs of study materials and of course guidance from their expert staff. Naturally, with such a commitment to their employees, they seek to employ the most talented individuals possible. Unfortunately, finding those individuals is becoming increasingly difficult.

So why is this? We have been hearing for months now how university graduates are taking low paid menial jobs due to a lack of graduate level opportunities. Eagle Consulting are constantly searching for talented young people to take on as trainees, yet they consistently struggle to recruit. The difficulty appears to stem from their location. Although their ever-increasing client base is national, with the majority of clients being based in the south east and London, the company is based in Inverness. It seems that many people of the calibre they are looking for have not yet been persuaded by the attractions of the Scottish Highlands.

The Scottish Highlands are without doubt one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places in the UK, if not the world. A quick internet search for Scottish Highlands will bring up a wealth of stunning images which may appear to be a romantic ideal, but which in fact represent a daily reality for those lucky enough to live there. Often referred to as the Outdoor Capital of the UK and home to Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, opportunities for the adventurous abound from skiing (on actual snow) and climbing to water sports and ‘munro-bagging’. Yet, despite being home to Europe’s largest natural wilderness, the Highlands do not lack for all the amenities modern life requires. The local airport allows you to connect with a variety of cities throughout the UK, including London, and the city of Inverness itself has everything you could possibly need, whether you are a young singleton looking for a vibrant nightlife, a family looking for child-friendly activities or an older couple looking for a quieter life. From beauty salons, health spas and yoga classes, to theatre, cinema and nightclubs, the Highlands have much to offer. To top it all off, Highland residents are among the happiest in the UK, the area has excellent schools and is considered to be one of the safest places to live in the UK.

Modern technology allows companies like Eagle Consulting to enjoy the best of both worlds: a modern, exciting, growing business with a national client base and the laid back lifestyle of the Scottish Highlands. In an age of increasing stress and rocketing living costs, perhaps people should consider their employment options with a broader mind and start looking further afield.

Established in 1993 Eagle Consulting now employs nearly 50 staff including several qualified accountants trained in the Big Four accountancy practices.
