Pocket Soft's code that enables automatic uploading of developer-generated data to the Google Cloud Blobstore, has been released as open source.

The Google App Engine allows free setup, supports industry-standard languages, like Python and Java (as well as Go, on an experimental basis), and is used for websites with significant server-side resource requirements. Pocket Soft's Update Direct enables Android developers to embed self-updating capabilities into their privately distributed off-market apps, and supports the hosting of those updates on Google App Engine websites. Data files to support Update Direct enabled Android app updates are stored via the Google Blobstore service.

"Many developers do not realize that it is difficult to use the Google App Engine for some purposes until well into the design - or worse - testing phase of their projects," says Kerry Jones, CTO of Pocket Soft. "One of the challenges we faced with using the Google App Engine was its lack of support for automatic uploading and storing of large, developer-generated data files. We solved this problem by writing a Google App Engine Python script that emulates a web browser, handling logins, cookies, certificates, forms and file submissions, in order to populate the Blobstore with developer-generated files."

Google has currently released over 20 million lines of code and 900 projects to the open source developer community. "Following Google's lead, we decided to release our Python-upload-to-Blobstore script to the open source community, since we felt that it could be useful to any developer writing code for Google App Engine hosted sites," says Jones.

The full Python script and source code are available as open source, directly from the Pocket Soft website.

Update Direct is a product of Pocket Soft, Inc., the maker of RTPatch, which has provided software updating to major corporations and government agencies since 1991. RTPatch supports all major operating systems for servers, desktop, mobile and embedded systems.
