Property marking is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to bring the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if an expensive item is stolen and later found by the police it can be returned to its rightful owner

Particularly in these times with smart technology ushering in a range of expensive devices that are built to be compactly mobile, there is a vast horizon of criminal opportunity since gadgets and other pricey equipment can be spirited away in the blink of an eye by thieves.
In line with the Metropolitan Police strongly recommending that people mark their property to ward off theft or in the worst case scenario help police return stolen goods to their rightful owners, Crime Prevention Products (CPP) explains the key options to help people protect their goods as effectively as possible.
Property marking has evolved to offer a range of convenient, affordable options to suit every individual’s needs and preferences:
UV marker pens are an easy yet effective way to mark property without spoiling the appearance of an item, since they use ink that is invisible to the naked eye. Only a UV light will reveal the marking, which police use when they retrieve stolen goods.. CPP advise that people write their post code and house number on items so that the police can quickly identify the owner. A further tip is to buy a quality UV pen that has a permanency of two years and is waterproof. These pens can be bought for as little as £71.
A more robust choice would be a property marking kit, which these days can be bought in the size of a wallet or small case. These kits come complete with record cards so that the owner can make notes on what they have marked and when, at least two different types of UV pens for different surfaces (such as one for normal hard surfaces and one for glass or China), and a stencil to ensure neat application so that even if a normal permanent marker is used on linen items it will look tidy. Finally, CPP advises that people choose a kit that includes a selection of security warning stickers to act as a visible deterrent by letting potential thieves know that their property is protected by identifiable personal information.
For bicycle owners, there are now specialised two-in-one security kits that contain a master lock with two unique keys, along with property marking warning stickers, laminate labels and a UV pen. These types of kits are also ideal for marking such items as lawn mowers, ladders and other gardening equipment. Both the police and CPP advice that these larger goods be marked in two places with the owners post code and house number using a UV pen. For full effectiveness, the UV markings should be reinforced by covering them with clear, waterproof laminate labels to ensure long-lasting durability.
CEO of Crime Prevention Products, Terry Rattee, concluded: “Property marking is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to bring the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if an expensive item is stolen and later found by the police it can be returned to its rightful owner. Using warning labels along with UV markings is also a simple but effective deterrent to ward off opportunistic criminals.”
