CBS Money Watch interviewed Ryan Holmes, CEO of HootSuite, on proper social media practice. Internet marketing company fishbat advises social media users to practice safe social networking.

On April 2, Internet marketing firm fishbat, Inc. offers advice on safe social networking practices to avoid losing social media followers.

According to CBS Money Watch, Ryan Holmes, CEO of HootSuite, provided tips on protecting company social media profiles, recommending measures such as password protection, content quality control and proper engagement.

“If your Twitter password is ‘password’ or ‘123456,’ you're begging to get cracked,” says Holmes.

According to Holmes’ interview, “[many] large businesses don't have centralized control over their social media.” Holmes adds that companies with numerous profiles “consequently discover that they have as many as dozens of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram accounts.”

“Whether you want that many different voices speaking for the company is one thing. Either way, centralize control and publishing of these accounts in a single tool that you can secure and protect,” says Holmes.

Holmes says that taking control of your posts is just the first step. Incorporating a strategy into the execution of your daily postings and following up with regular training are key ways to further enhance your social media campaign.

“Your company can face dire consequences if your social campaign is ever jeopardized,” comments fishbat CEO Clay Darrohn. “If you don't take the proper steps to protect and coordinate your social media accounts, you're only sabotaging your own efforts. As an Internet marketing firm, we do social media operations for many of our clients. That takes a lot of managing, and if one slip-up were to occur across the board, there would be a lot of angry people calling to complain. These things can seriously damage your business, or, worse, your clients'.”

Darrohn adds that an important component to a strong social presence is to have a knowledgeable, dedicated social media manager on staff. “You can’t run a kitchen without a chef. If your community manager can’t handle several profiles at once, it might be time to invest in a digital marketing agency to help out.”
