The Association for Corporate Growth® (ACG), the global organization focused on driving middle-market growth, held the ACG Growth Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, March 7.

At the Summit, ACG introduced Driving Growth: The Impact of Private Capital on the U.S. Economy, a book that graphically presents, for the first time, sales and job growth data of private capital-backed companies versus other companies in the U.S. economy from 1995-2010. Pulled from, this data is displayed by state and congressional district. The book presents never-before publicly released data which graphically illustrates the positive impact of private capital investment across the United States.

In addition, ACG Middle Market Voice committee co-chairs, Gretchen Perkins, partner, Huron Capital Partners and Richard Jaffe, partner, Duane Morris LLP, presented the first ACG Growth Policy Agenda which sets forth the legislative and regulatory issues that will foster growth of middle-market companies. They discussed each issue and described the impact that public policy has on middle-market investment and growth.

“ACG supports the growth and development of middle market companies by supporting pro-growth policies that foster and incentivize private capital formation and investment,” said Richard Jaffe.

Special Guest Speakers
The Summit featured Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) who spoke about the debt crisis and how the inaction of Congress could have a lasting legacy in Washington, D.C. if the critical issues are not addressed and eventually solved.

David Schweikert (R-AZ) participated in a Q&A discussion led by Pam Hendrickson, ACG Chair-Elect, and COO of The Riverside Company. The conversation identified the work that is still needed on building bi-partisan support on many initiatives and highlighted the need for education of policy makers and shapers by providing data on job growth and economic stability, such as ACG’s DRIVING GROWTH publication and site.

Doug Holtz-Eakin, president, American Action Forum and former Director of the Congressional Budget Office, shared his insight on the budget crisis and helped put in perspective the scope of what it will take to ensure the future vitality and growth of the U.S. economy can survive. Dr. Holtz-Eakin will also present at ACG’s annual InterGrowth meeting on Tuesday, April 23 in Orlando.

Steve Judge, president & CEO, PEGCC; Greg Fine, CEO, Turnaround Management Company and Gary A. LaBranche, president and CEO, ACG participated in a panel moderated by Charles J. Morton, Jr., ACG Chairman and partner, Venable LLP. The first gathering of this group of industry leaders provided an opportunity to showcase the common themes each organization is focused on and highlighted opportunities to collaborate in the policy process.

“Collaboration between associations is critical to advancing and improving the image of private capital investors and the critical role of middle-market companies” said LaBranche. “Working together, we will more effectively demonstrate that private capital investment is a public good.”

Summit attendees also heard from David Hirschmann, president and CEO, U.S. Chamber Center for Capital Markets Competitiveness. Mr. Hirschmann provided an overview of the U.S. Chamber’s policy initiatives and outlined the challenging legislative environment.
