Lafayette, IN (PRWEB) April 01, 2013
Dr. Marlin Schul and a team from the Lafayette Regional Vein and Laser Center in Lafayette, IN joined a group of vein specialists for an annual pilgrimage to Honduras to help thousands of patients suffering from vein disease. The mission was part of the Hackett-Hemwall Foundation’s efforts. Established in the 1960’s, the foundation is dedicated to serving the health needs of undeserved populations in Honduras and other third world countries.
As the Lafayette team set out for the clinic in Honduras, the energy was palpable. Dr. Schul, who is a graduate of the Krannert School of Management in addition to being a physician, was able to employ both his medical and management skills. Given the burden of venous ulcers in the Honduras population, the team helped to establish a dedicated wound station to serve as the primary setting for wound care. This will free up approximately 30 minutes in additional physician time per ulcer patient, and will ultimately enhance the physician team’s ability to evaluate and perform more surgeries for those in need.
In Honduras, the average patient travels many hours to be evaluated and treated. “I told my priest I was not going to come,” said one 70-year-old woman seeking care. “He encouraged me to visit the clinic as my legs have been so painful over the past few years. He has personally seen the benefits that the clinic offers to others who have gone. I called my daughter who drove six hours to pick me up. We drove another 12 hours to the clinic, and waited five hours to be seen.”
Dr. Schul reported that the patient had a serious case of vein disease. Thankfully, the medical team of vein specialists was able to successfully treat her, and the patient left the clinic overjoyed to have made the journey.
Stories like that are what make the commitment to travel to underprivileged regions very rewarding for Dr. Schul and his team. Their influence on operations at the Honduras clinic helped doctors treat over 25% more patients than had ever been treated before. After visiting the clinic and observing the operational setting for a week, Dr. Schul is already working behind the scenes to further enhance the offerings at the clinic and garner additional support.
