Local half marathoner and her sponsor are calling on all cancer haters and run-nerds in Hampton Roads to rise to the challenge of raising $5,000 for cancer research at VCU Massey Cancer Center.

The Cancer Hater Challenge puts runners on treadmills for 24 hours to raise money for cancer research.

Running 13.1 miles can be tough, but it's still easier than chemo.

Still Easier Than Chemo and Point 2 Running Company have teamed up to challenge local runners to a 24-hour treadmill-a-thon on May 10-11 to raise money in support of research at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Massey Cancer Center.

After losing her mom to metastatic colon cancer in August of 2012, Briana Kirby decided to channel her grief into making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. Not only is she running 12 half marathons in 12 months in tribute to her mother, Kirby is also on a mission to raise $15,720 in support of research at VCU Massey Cancer Center.

“Running 13.1 miles may be tough, but it’s still easier than chemo,” said Kirby of the inspiration behind her fundraising campaign.

The event, 24 Hour Cancer Hater Challenge, is the result of a partnership between Kirby and her sponsor, Point 2 Running Company.

“Point 2 Running Company is proud to partner with Still Easier than Chemo to combine our mutual love of running and helping people to raise money for cancer research. We are truly excited about raising a significant amount of money for this great cause all within 24 hours,” said Andrea Lehmkuhler, General Manager of Point 2.

Tidewater Physical Therapy is honored to help with the event and provide treadmills for the runners and participants.

Runners (and walkers) can choose their hour-of-choice on RaceIt.com.

Once participants register for the event, they will receive instructions on how to setup a personal fundraising page powered by Fundly.com. Donations made through Fundly go to fund research at Massey.

The individual who raises the most will win head-to-toe Brooks running gear.
