The 5th Annual Mission-Driven Management Summit, held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, March 5-6, featured keynote presentations by Dave Norton on “When Targets Become Self-Fulfilling” as well as the World Bank’s Pedro Alba discussing the Bank’s Latin America and Caribbean Region’s (LCR’s) experience in implementing the Balanced Scorecard across its 13 units.
Norton’s discussion compared the value multipliers derived from strategy execution of for-profit versus mission-driven organizations. He found that while for-profits that were “Hall of Fame” strategy execution organizations had higher multipliers—achieving an increase of 150% of shareholder value—“Hall of Fame” mission-driven organizations were still doing rather well—increasing their mission measure by 100%.
Alba talked about how when the World Bank LCR began looking at their strategic measures, they discovered that they were doing worse in areas they thought they were doing well and well in areas where they thought they needed work, which had implications for strategic investments.
“The Summit was attended by more than 100 individuals for the fifth consecutive year and was a huge success,” said Ted Jackson, Managing Partner at Ascendant Strategy Management Group, the consultancy that sponsored the conference. “Returning speakers continued to inspire participants with their stories of sustained success while new speakers from mission-driven organizations shared their best practices and lessons learned.”
Additional speakers included representatives of the CFA Institute, the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and the FBI.
