Pacific Metrics Corporation releases software that supports content authoring tools for Smarter Balanced.

More than one million students in Smarter Balanced governing states are scheduled to participate in the pilot test.

Pacific Metrics Corporation, a leading provider of advanced assessment and technology solutions, has successfully delivered a release of the item authoring and item pool (IAIP) application software for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced). This release is a key milestone in the development of assessments that give educators and parents a clearer picture of where students are succeeding and where they need additional support. This system brings the Race to the Top (RTTT) vision of improved assessments one step closer to reality, and supports the Smarter Balanced commitment to bring to the classroom a high-quality assessment system that improves instruction and helps students succeed, regardless of disability, language or subgroup.

This latest release provides tools to develop test items that include multi-media attributes, such as audio and video, and tools to incorporate Accessible Portable Item Protocol (APIP) standards and other customizations for accessibility and testing accommodations. More than one million students in Smarter Balanced governing states are scheduled to participate in the pilot test between February and May 2013. The test items will eventually be part of the assessment system used by an anticipated 20 million students across Smarter Balanced member states.

Pacific Metrics has been a leader in providing state-wide online high-stakes assessments since 2006. The company pioneered the delivery of statewide online formative assessments beginning in 2002. As evidenced by this latest release of the IAIP software, Pacific Metrics continues to lead in delivering progressive technologies for web-based assessment systems in support of student learning and achievement.

“This software release provides the consortium with critical authoring tools needed for item development. We are particularly pleased to support the work of Smarter Balanced toward developing assessments that are accessible to all students through the incorporation of APIP-compliant features,” states Stella Gibbs, Executive Vice President at Pacific Metrics.
