SGS Systems and Services Certification (SSC), a Division of SGS North America, is proud to announce that it has achieved ANAB (ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board) accreditation to provide certification against the requirements of ISO 50,001, Energy Management System standard after a successful assessment by ANAB.

“We are very proud of this achievement to be able to provide Energy Management System Certification services under ANAB accreditation in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and 19 other countries. This demonstrates the strength of our global network” states Tony Perkins, Senior Vice President, SSC North America.

The ISO 50,001 Energy Management Systems standard was developed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and specifies requirements for an organization to establish, implement, maintain and improve an energy management system, which enables an organization to take a systematic approach to achieve continual improvement of energy performance, energy efficiency and energy conservation. It helps organizations manage energy supply and energy uses and consumption, including measurement, documentation and reporting, design and procurement practices for energy using equipment, systems, processes, and personnel. Implementation of the standard should lead to reductions in energy cost, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts through systematic management of energy. It is estimated that the standard could influence up to 60 percent of the world’s energy consumption and has the potential to become a global trade catalyst for industrial energy use.

ISO 50,001 is an international framework for industrial, commercial or institutional facilities, or entire companies, to manage their energy, including procurement and use. It is applicable to all types and sizes of organizations irrespective of geographical, cultural or social conditions.

Conformance with ISO 50,001 demonstrates that a plant or company has a sustainable Energy Management System in place, has completed a baseline of energy use, and has committed to continuously improve energy intensity.

Improved energy performance can provide rapid benefits for an organization by maximizing the use of its energy sources and energy-related assets, thus reducing both energy costs and consumption. The U.S Department of Energy (DOE) supports the ISO 50,001 standard as a proven approach for U.S. industrial and commercial facilities to plan, manage, measure, and continually improve energy performance.

Several organizations worldwide are already seeing significant benefits and energy cost savings from their early ISO 50,001 implementations. For example, a LCD TV manufacturer is expecting to achieve 10% energy conservation at its plant in one year. This will save an estimated 55 million kWh of electricity and reduce carbon emissions by 35,000 tons. Another company, a leading provider of power and thermal management solutions, reduced power consumption by 10.51 million kWh over a one year period after implementing ISO 50,001 in one factory.
