It was a beautifully simple view of a son’s relationship with his dad. It’s a terrific subject for a children’s book.

When six year old Wade Mattingly showed his school assignment to his dad one afternoon in 2011, the youngster never imagined that two years later the project would become an illustrated children’s book. That’s exactly what will happen this May when Wade’s book, Sometimes, My Dad and I (Matting Leah Publishing Company), is published. Meet Wade Mattingly at his first ever book signing at Ye Olde Warwick Book Shoppe in Warwick, New York on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.
The 16 page board book, with illustrations by C. Pierson DeCesare, focuses on the activities that fathers and sons do together. Though they may range from trivial to ordinary for us adults, they mean the world to a child. "Each page included one line, like ‘Sometimes, my dad and me, sometimes go to the park together,’ and ‘Sometimes, my dad and me, sometimes read to each other,’” Wade’s dad, Tom Mattingly explains. “It was a beautifully simple view of a son’s relationship with his dad. It’s a terrific subject for a children’s book. Not only will children love to read it, but adults will remember their childhood and doing those special, everyday things with their own parents.”
With editing help from his dad who added a few pages of text, Wade had a real book manuscript. When Tom, who writes under the name Matthew S. Field, asked what his son thought about publishing the book "for real," Wade replied that it was “a really good idea.” And from that simple agreement, they went to work. It didn’t hurt that the Tom Mattingly also operates a small press publishing business in New York's Hudson Valley.
Although he may not be the youngest author ever to have published a book -- records indicate the title may have gone to a four year old -- Wade is more concerned with practicing cursive writing for his book signings.
