Forward Thinking Proves Fruitful for Faulkner Design Group

One of the first to use Revit to create, manipulate 3D interiors and objects in the design process.

While it’s not wise to fix what isn’t broken, it is beneficial to make improvements; especially when those improvements save time, stress and money. With that type of forward thinking in mind, Faulkner Design Group once again pushed the design curve by being one of the first interior design firm to bring Autodesk Revit software into the industry. Albert Tang, director of architecture for FDG said Revit’s features go above and beyond AutoCAD, making it well worth the investment.

“It has always been our philosophy to lead and innovate in this industry, as well as to anticipate trends,” said Tang. “As one of the first interior design firm to use Revit almost seven years ago, we were able to set the bar high for other firms. In the years since we’ve brought Revit into the industry, FDG has been able to design, create and develop cutting-edge spaces that may have not been possible otherwise.”

With Revit, FDG architects are able to create and manipulate interiors and objects as part of the design process. Revit also has the rendering capabilities to add textures, colors and lighting to an interior view, making it helpful for quick visualization and in client presentations.

Since incorporating Revit into its software repertoire, FDG has used it to design Forest City West Village in Dallas; AMLI Escena in Irving; Texas Crestview CCRC in Bryan; Avalon at Westmont Station in Wood-Ridge, NJ; and Huntington Beach Lofts, Huntington Beach, Cali.

Tang noted that FDG continues to use AutoCAD for many drawing tasks, especially when exchanging files and drawing information with architects and other consultants who are AutoCAD based. However, Revit has allowed the firm to bring innovative solutions to sometimes complex design projects, and effectively incorporate the latest technologies into the process.

Perhaps the most notable feature of Revit, according to Tang, is its ability to instantaneously handle revisions across all drawings, which in turn reduces planning errors that cause costly changes.

“With a single database file rather than multiple drawing files, Revit makes life easier from a drawing management standpoint,” said Tang. “The 3D modeling capability is built in so we don’t have to export the plans to other software if we need to quickly see something in three dimensions. We can also easily create and customize room schedules to document interior finishes room by room, which is a vital tool to have when designing multi-building living communities.”
