Although epilepsy can be reasonably well controlled by medication, approximately 30% of sufferers find that they do not have complete control over their seizures. It is therefore important that friends, work colleagues, teachers and caregivers have the First Aid Training skills to cope with an unexpected seizure. Knowing what to do, and just as importantly, what not to do, could be vital in that situation. Ideally, every workplace and childcare or educational institution should have a number of personnel with specialised first aid training for this kind of emergency.
All seizures are different and each patient will have a unique experience. Some experience a warning, or aura, others do not. The following seizure may be partial, or be a fully fledged convulsion. Sufferers may or may not remain aware throughout. Informed work colleagues or care providers will know how to deal with the patient during and after the seizure and if or when it is necessary to call the emergency services. GK First Aid Training will prepare participants to deal with any of these emergency medical situations.
GK First Aid Training have now implemented epilepsy awareness in all Paediatric First Aid training and also the First Aid at Work courses offered throughout the UK. The awareness programme is in conjunction with its new branding website launched in March and can be visited at http://www.gkfirstaidtraining.co.uk. The website now includes course content PDF information sheets and includes in detail 'What to do' in the event of someone having a seizure and how to take the best course of action.
Since the new Website launch GK First Aid Training are reacting to an increase of enquiries from Nurseries and schools to include specific focus on how to deal with First Aid in the event of epilepsy. The new addition of these courses will meet the requirements of Schools and Nurseries as well as First Aid at Work courses.

Additionally, the company offers in-house training for schools, colleges and businesses. This allows up to 12 delegates to receive first aid training at the same time. These courses can be one or three days in length, depending on an organisation’s needs. The three-day course is designed for those wishing to undergo more thorough training and qualify for HSE approval. GK First-Aid Training’s courses are Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and OFSTED approved.
