Health and safety in the workplace encompasses a myriad of issues. The health and wellbeing of workers can be adversely affected by lighting, noise levels, ventilation, and by jobs that are sedentary and/or carry high stress levels. Other jobs require workers to be on their feet all day, to work outside in extreme weather, to lift or move heavy weights or work anti-social hours or do night shifts, which can affect sleep patterns and have an insidious effect on workers’ long-term health.
While some workplace safety issues, such as those faced by construction workers, fishermen, members of the armed forces, etc., are clearly defined, there are many other – apparently lesser - risks that can still seriously impact workers’ health. Pressure, whether real or imagined, can also put employees in danger, even outside the actual workplace – consider a harassed and anxious employee who is rushing to an appointment through heavy traffic, perhaps further distracted by a phone call, or a stressed and overburdened worker who starts drinking heavily. Arguably, these are personal choices but workplace pressures are an evident trigger. Appropriate training in health and safety issues in the workplace can help protect workers from work-related injury or health problems and will benefit the employer as workers take fewer sick days and are happier and more productive at work.
