Kettlebells expert Lorna Kleidman releases a statement in response to heart study linking healthy living to cancer prevention.

On April 3, 2013, kettlebell champion Lorna Kleidman releases a statement regarding a new study that suggests keeping your heart healthy to help prevent cancer.

According to CBS News, new research found that people who follow the American Heart Association’s “Life’s Simple 7” plan to help lower the risk of heart disease may also be getting an added benefit of cancer prevention.

The seven steps according to CBS News are as follows:

  • Adults should get at least 30 minutes of physical activity such as brisk walking, and should exercise five times a week.
  • Keeping a healthy weight matters, and keeping off fat around the waist is extremely important.
  • Diet is another big part of the “Life’s Simple 7” and should be low in saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars.
  • Maintaining Cholesterol by keeping the bad LDL cholesterol down, helps prevent heart attacks
  • Blood pressure is something else that should be kept low, and can be the most significant risk factor for heart disease.
  • Blood sugar levels need to be moderated. Diabetes can make your blood sugar rise ,which can damage the heart.
  • Not smoking is the last part of the “Life’s Simple 7” steps, as smoking damages the entire circulatory system, and increases your risk for coronary heart disease.

CBS News reports that, “For the new study, published March 18 in the AHA's journal Circulation, researchers tracked more than 13,000 white and black Americans enrolled in a long-running study of atherosclerosis risk that kicked off in 1987. Participants were interviewed at the study's start to gauge their health habits, and about 20 years later, researchers looked at cancer registries and hospitals to determine that more than 2,800 of the participants had developed cancer. Lung, colon, rectum, prostate and breast cancers were most common.”

Researchers found that people who followed the “Life’s Simple 7” steps reduced their risk of cancer by 51 percent, compared to those who didn’t follow any of the steps.

Lorna Kleidman, a world champion athlete and kettlebells trainer commented on the new study. “Heart health should be something on the top of everyone’s priority list. Now with research supporting that these steps also help prevent cancer, everyone should be trying to incorporate many of these steps into their daily lives as much as possible. These steps are a great way to make sure your heart stays healthy. Kettlebell training is a great way to provide the daily exercise a person needs, and is perfect for adults looking to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity.”

Lorna Kleidman is a three-time World Champion and World Record holder in kettlebell sport and the most decorated kettlebell athlete in the country. She developed the innovative methods used in KettleX as a way to bring the benefits of the bells to everyone in an easy-to-use, comprehensive and fun format.
