On April 4, 2013, Colle Farmers Market releases a statement following a Tampa Bay Times article by Laura Reiley regarding the organic farm My Mothers Garden in Wimauma Florida. The organic farm has become a way of life, providing local organic produce for over 20 years.
According to Tampa Bay Times, “My Mothers Garden” was incorporated and certified organic back in 1992. My Mothers Garden is part of a community of small Florida farmers who sell at farmer’s markets through the Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA.
Tampa Bay Times reports that for nearly 20 years, Susan Bishop and her family have grown herbs and vegetables and brought them to the Sarasota Farmers’ Market, and have started to go to the newer organic markets forming around the area as well.
The article goes on to mention that Bishop didn’t grow up farming. Susan and her family moved onto the land in 1988, when she gave up her job as a welder to become a full time farmer. Bishop started her organic farming adventure with cattle, which eventually led to her selling grass-fed beef.
According to Bishop, the biggest problem with grass-fed beef is teaching people how to cook it. “You really shouldn't cook grass-fed beef beyond medium rare. There's a lot of information out there now, so a lot of people are aware of the health benefits."
Eventually Bishop added hogs and chickens to her organic farm, along with herbs and vegetables. To Bishop, organic farming quickly went from an occupation to a way of life.
A representative from Colle farmers market commented on the Wimauma farm more than just a place to grow organically. “With organic farming, as opposed to more conventional farms, it’s more of a way of life than just an occupation. Organic farmers treat their produce as if they themselves were eating it, so why would they want to use antibiotics or pesticides to ruin their food? Organic farming is about the land, and trying to keep things as natural as possible. It can become a way of life faster than you know!”
Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all people who are living an organic and natural lifestyle.
