Extra virgin olive oil producer Bellucci Premium affirms the link between scent and satisfaction.

On April 11, Natalie Sexenian, the marketing manager for extra virgin olive oil producer Bellucci Premium, responds to new research that olive oil’s aroma could be one of its most important benefits.

According to the New York Times, extra virgin olive oil has a high oleic acid content and many antioxidants. While these are some of the popular benefits of extra virgin olive oil, the article says research now proves aroma could also be one of its main health advantages.

One study found that adding aromatic extract to food could actually discourage people from consuming as much food. It also improved their blood sugar response, the article says.

However, a new study conducted by members of the German Research Center for Food Chemistry found that participants ate less when the food was mixed with olive oil extract. The article says manipulating the smells of certain food could help influence the amount of food people eat.

While oleic acid has been known to increase the feeling of fullness, Sexenian says the new study suggests aroma could have the same effect. “In the newest study from the German Research Center for Food Chemistry, scientists found that the aroma increased serotonin levels,” she says. “This helped patients feel fuller and it reduced their caloric intake. A study like this could be useful for people who want to lose weight in a healthy way. The natural components of olive oil put vitamins back into the body as it curbs appetite.”

Sexenian says aroma influences taste. “If something smells a certain way, it could promote or discourage eating,” she says. “Extra virgin olive oil can have a variety of different aromas that enhance the taste of dishes. Some smell sweet and others smell more Earthy. Extra virgin olive oil has the potential to make the entire dish come together.”
