Manhattan Beach, CA (PRWEB) April 04, 2013
Alan Hirsch, M.D., F.A.C.P, board-certified neurologist and nationally recognized smell and taste expert, is featured in an educational program, “Power of Scent” that is currently airing on select Public Television Stations throughout the U.S. An hour-long documentary style program featuring scientists, experts, psychologists and patients, “Power of Scent” guides Public Television viewers through the unseen, surprising and widely underestimated world of our most powerful sense – smell.
Throughout the segment, Dr. Hirsch and other experts delve into the effects of smell and taste on human emotion, mood, behavior, and weight loss. Dr. Hirsch states that in his research, 75 percent of those who experienced a decrease in their sense of smell, gained weight. In fact, studies have shown that those with a diminished sense of smell are not able to experience the flavor of food and are therefore never fully satisfied.
“As you eat, smell and taste receptors send messages to your brain. These messages release hormones that tell you when you are satisfied and it’s time to stop eating. This process is called Sensory Specific Satiety,” said Dr. Alan Hirsch, founder and neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. “During the program, we look at those who have lost their sense of smell and have difficulty experiencing satisfaction when eating as they truly can’t appreciate the flavor. We also examine whether a heightened sense of smell can have a reverse effect, allowing one to become satiated faster.”
The patients featured in “Power of Scent” further verify the strong correlation between smell and hunger and appetite. The 60-minute program also explores how the sense of smell diminishes as one ages; how the reduced ability to smell can impacts one’s life; and how smell and taste work together.
