PRO Compression ultra endurance athlete James Walsh discusses the benefits of using compression socks after an injury to boost the recovery process.

On April 4, new PRO Compression athlete James Walsh releases a statement advocating the use of compression socks to speed up the recovery process after suffering from an injury.

Walsh, who officially signed with PRO Compression this year, injured his femur in the Big Baz 21K and the Bandit Ultra Trail 50k races in February. Though it wasn’t a fracture, doctors said Walsh suffered a stress reaction, which caused intense pain. “Basically, I had caught the injury just before it became a stress fracture,” Walsh says. “It’s like a hot spot on the bone that has been weakened. It’s from putting your body through more than it could recover from.”

Stress reactions and stress fractures are common in ultra runners, Walsh says. While compression socks cannot protect from serious injuries, they can reduce the likelihood of developing blisters and boost the recovery process. “When running, I use low-cut socks that have minor compression,” he says. “I’ve found that while running 50-mile races in pouring rain and mud, I’ve never gotten a single blister with PRO Compression socks. A lot of other socks seem to be too tight in the foot, but PRO Compression socks have different grades of compression throughout the foot and softer foot pads.”
