Following reports that a recent marathon in Oakland, California was able to draw more than 9,000 runners to the event, PRO Compression releases a statement.

On April 12, 2013, PRO Compression releases a statement following an SFGate article by Julian Guthrie regarding the Oakland Running Festival, which featured a marathon, half marathon, a 5k race, relays, and running events for kids. The festival drew more than 9,000 people, and the marathon was won by Shinji Nakadai.

According to the SFGate article, the Oakland Running Festival drew more than 9,000 runners, but it was world champion “ultra runner” Shinji Nakadai who would win the marathon. Nakadai has clocked more than 62 miles in 6 hours and 43 minutes. He planned to run home on Sunday, running from Oakland to Berkeley.

The article states that while the marathon was the main event, there were other attractions such as a four-person relay, a 5k run, and even a kids' fun run, which was about a quarter-mile in distance. The event was expected to generate $9 million for the city of Oakland, and around $750,000 would be going to local charities.

The Mayor of Oakland, Jean Quan, was quoted in the article as saying, “We do 43 festivals a year that bring in about 4 million visitors, and this event is in the top two. There are runners from 30 states and 8 foreign countries, and the runners all come in and say they loved what they saw.” Quan is a former long-distance runner, and the article reports that she took pictures as she walked the marathon, posting them on her Facebook as she went.

There were also 18 cheering stations set up to help encourage runners along the way.
