In celebration of April’s Jazz Appreciation Month, CSS Music, a leader in royalty free background music and sound effects, highlights the importance of jazz music in the production industry.
Commercial use of jazz is often shunned by the genre’s staunch devotees. Many argue that jazz should not be tainted to fit mainstream tastes. Although some purists decry the unconventional use of this classic American art form, jazz has long been a staple in production music libraries across the globe. The smooth, sultry music transcends conventional production themes which often require boisterous background music for dramatic effect.
In April, CSS Music will take the time, like countless jazz aficionados, to celebrate jazz’s ability to absorb, reflect and actually amplify other musical genres. Similar to classical music, jazz is not only enjoyed by millions as a standalone genre but also as a catalyst for audio visual media, particularly film and television. The use of jazz adds emotional depth unseen in many standard forms of production music, bringing underlying emotions to the forefront.
“Our clients have been asking for “something kinda jazzy” for as long as I can remember,” says CSS Music Marketing Director, Mike Fuller. “Light Jazz was in great demand not too long ago probably because it was the ‘go anywhere — do anything’ musical genre. It was the quick sure choice, adding character without offending anyone. Light Jazz has probably been replaced by what I call ‘New Marketplace’ -- ‘a powerful sell in a New Age Shell’. As a cross between New Age and Light Industrial, this hybrid does much the same job that Light Jazz used to do. Some of the best listening we have in the library, however, is either jazz or jazz influenced. It has great ‘ear candy and is just plain fun to listen to. The challenge with jazz though is that it has to go with the flow of a show. And it can’t fight visuals, dialog or adjacent segments.”
CSS Music’s library holds more than 680 jazz recordings, ranging from hot, up tempo jazz to mellow cool jazz. For a full list of CSS Music’s jazz tracks visit dawnmusic.com.
