Remember the madness that grabbed the world

Only people who have been on an Antarctic expedition, or stuck in a papal conclave since the start of the year would not have come across the Harlem Shake. With the internet meme going viral and worldwide, it’s been pretty difficult to avoid.

Shorter than Gangnam Style, easier to organise than a flash mob, anybody and everybody with a video camera can create a Harlem Shake video, and it seems like almost everyone has. Type in Harlem Shake to YouTube, and there are no less than 13½ million results.

Ever keen to combine the latest news and fashion, the famous t-shirt makers at 8Ball have brought the worldwide craze to a T-Shirt, so everyone can wear the Harlem Shake as well as watch it. The new Harlem Shake mens t-shirts and Harlem Shake ladies t-shirts feature the original crew that started it all back on February 2nd. The teenagers, from Queensland Australia, uploaded their video under the title The Sunny Coast Shake. Just two weeks later, there were 40,000 Harlem Shake films online, which together had been viewed over 175 million times.

For the Antactric explorers and Cardinals reading, the concept is incredibly simple. Each consists of a 30” film that begins with one person dancing to the intro of the Baauer single Harlem Shake, then at 15”, as the bass line kicks in, the video cuts sharply and the single person is suddenly joined by a huge crowd dancing wildly to the music in their own unique way.

The Harlem Shake has been done by groups across the world, from the Israeli Army to Manchester City FC, from The Simpsons to Cambridge University students, and it has earned Baauer a small fortune in the process. Not only has his track been a worldwide hit, reaching number 1 on the US Billboard chart, he has also claimed a percentage of the ad revenue from every video that uses his track, by way of a copyright levy.

Of course, internet memes are never cool for long, and chances are that it’s way too late to create a Harlem Shake video. But that doesn’t mean there is no room to celebrate the fantastic idea that united the world from Delhi to Down Under with these hardcore Harlem Shake shirts in mens and womens cuts. So get Harlem Shaking with 8Ball and remember the madness that gripped the world.
