Bird Barrier's Solar Panel Protection Kit

This is such an easy and attractive solution, everybody tells us they should have invented it themselves.

Solar panels are typically installed about six inches above a roof. Due to the sensitivity of the equipment, it is very risky driving screws into the panels, or the roof below, and voids the warranty of most photovoltaic panels.

Bird Barrier, the leader in humane bird control, recently introduced a fast and simple solution, a kit of clever clips and PVC coated metal mesh that are installed like a fence to keep all birds from getting under the solar panels.

The clips attach to the framing on the underside of the panels, about every 18 inches around the perimeter of the panels. Six inch serrated plastic rods are attached to the clip. These thin rods are threaded through a square of the metal mesh, and a locking clip is then slid down the rod. The ratcheted clip pushes the metal mesh snugly up against the side of the panel and it is locked in place.

"This is such an easy and attractive solution, everybody tells us they should have invented it themselves," said Cameron Riddell, President of Bird Barrier America. "That's always how it is with the best ideas," he said. "The only word of caution we offer to our customers is to pay special attention to safety; working on a roof can be dangerous."

A typical residential solar array of 26 panels (with a perimeter of 110 feet) utilizes 73 clips can be protected in about three hours for shingle roofs. The system will work with Spanish tile roofs as well, but requires the mesh to be trimmed with a metal shear so it follows the contours of the arches.

Bird Barrier offers the clips alone in 50 or 100 packs, or in kits with the metal mesh rolls (eight inches wide by 25 or 50 feet in length). Either way they come with installation instructions. To date, thousands of these kits have been installed and not a single one has had any issues and all clients report 100% success.
