In response to an article posted by NBC Latino, which discusses a former mayor’s new bodybuilding hobby, Muscular Development magazine issues a statement commending him for his workout efforts.

On April 11, Muscular Development magazine responds to an article published by NBC Latino about a former mayor’s bodybuilding hobby.

According to the article published by NBC Latino, Miami-Dade’s former mayor Carlos Alvarez has recently been competing in bodybuilding contests. At 60 years old, Alvarez says he wanted to prove people wrong by winning and participating in bodybuilding contests. In the article, he says, “I was challenged into it, they told me a person my age, I’m 60, couldn’t do such a thing.”

Since Alvarez was voted out of office in 2011, the article says he has been concentrating on weightlifting and working out. Brian Turner, a spokesperson for Muscular Development magazine, says society has shifted to focus on health. “Much of our daily lives are driven by our health,” he says. “More than ever, people are starting to take control of their lives and get in shape because of the consequences of obesity. They realize that maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help them live longer and better.”

Turner adds that becoming a bodybuilder at 60 years old is a great accomplishment. “When people get older, they lose a lot of their muscle mass,” he says. “To keep muscle and to build muscle after a certain age requires a lot of work. Sometimes combining an exercise routine with a strict diet, a lot of protein and [pre-workout supplements can help build muscle. Usually, that’s the only way someone could rapidly gain muscle mass at that age. It’s also important to build strong bones and concentrate on recovery time as you get older. Alvarez is in great shape and he deserves the success he’s had in recent competitions.”

The article reveals that Alvarez won a recent bodybuilding competition in the older, over-60 age category. He says he plans on participating in one more contest before retiring.
