Voices Against Brain Cancer to Host Inaugural “Join the Voices! Chicago Run/Walk” in Lincoln Park

Voices Against Brain Cancer (VABC) announces first annual “Join the Voices!” charity walk and run in Chicago to raise funds for brain cancer and brain tumor research. Illinois residents and members of the medical community will be honored at the event.

Voices Against Brain Cancer will host the first annual “Join the Voices! Chicago Run/Walk” on Sunday, May 5, 2013 in Lincoln Park, Chicago at 8 a.m. The charitable event will feature a 5K run, a scenic walk, kids races and a fun family festival. Funds raised will go toward the advancement of brain cancer research, as a testament of hope for the people in the world who are diagnosed with brain tumors. Local patients, doctors and caregivers will be honored for their valiant fights against brain cancer.

This year’s honorees have been chosen for their continued efforts to help raise brain cancer and brain tumor awareness. The recipients of the Gary Lichtenstein Humanitarian Awards are Dr. M. Kelly Nicholas, Director of the Brain Tumor Center at The University of Chicago and Dr. Robert Aiken, Director of the Coleman Foundation Comprehensive Brain & Spine Tumor Clinic at Rush University.

Additional award recipients include:

  • Courage Awards: Dr. Bill Barrows, Garrett FitzGerald, Anna Litchfield, Barry Wood
  • Caregiver Award: Alec Panici
  • Compassionate Care Awards: Laura Zuckerman, APN-BC, Rush University; Jean     Arzbaecher, APN, University of Chicago
  • Youth Ambassadors: Kelly Maganini, Michael Maganini, RJ Maganini, Katie Rokusek

Voices Against Brain Cancer was founded in loving memory of Gary Lichtenstein, a former Chicago resident, who lost his valiant battle with brain cancer on October 1, 2003.

“Chicago is very special to us, as an organization and as a family, as it was Gary’s home until just before he passed,” said Mario Lichtenstein, co-founder of Voices Against Brain Cancer and Gary’s father. “We are proud to assist in the fight against brain cancer and will continue to do so until a cure is found.”

Individuals interested in supporting Voices Against Brain Cancer through other athletic events can join Voices in Motion. This extension of the organization was created to encourage individuals to start or join a team for an upcoming event while raising money to support brain cancer research.

VABC's mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.

VABC has a wide variety of initiatives in place for brain cancer research, awareness and support. The organization’s research grants fund cutting-edge programs that will have a monumental impact on the diagnosis and treatment of brain cancer. Currently, these grants are being funded at numerous esteemed institutions including: Rush University, The University of Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, John Hopkins, MD Anderson, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Yale and more.
