Cullina will present Not So Tweet and Innocent—How Social Media Impacts Personal Lines on Thursday, April 11 from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. CDT. The presentation will focus on the increasing use of social media and the internet and the emerging risk areas for insurers, like:

  •     Does the homeowner on the policy expect to be covered if faced with a cyberbullying (or other online activity) lawsuit?
  •     Are there any exclusions in the policy that would limit coverage?
  •     As a carrier, do we have the competitive edge to cover liability from social media actions to best serve our customers?

The session will also address risk mitigation tools and best practices to protect policyholders. Cullina will join a roster of presenters from companies like The Motorists Insurance Group, Gen Re, Munich Reinsurance, and Insurance Information Institute.

Explaining the presentation content, Cullina said, “The advent of social media has created a new risk category for insurers. A parent may assume they’re covered under their homeowner’s policy for a cyberbullying lawsuit, but personal injury is usually not covered under a standard homeowner’s insurance policy.” He adds, “Carriers need to examine their coverage offerings to see if their policies cover social media risks and liabilities. It’s imperative that insurers know how to educate their policyholders on the risks while maintaining the appropriate amount of coverage.”
