In tough times no one can afford the risk of paying out for dodgy work only for it to need rectifying later, so people are making sure they choose their tradesmen more wisely than ever.

Square Deal is Portsmouth City Council’s fair trade scheme, designed to protect residents from rogue traders, by listing approved and reviewed contractors on their website. Now in a dramatic improvement to the service, Trading Standards for Portsmouth are listing all of their Green Deal approved contractors in the scheme too.
The Green Deal is a finance system that enables homeowners and businesses to make improvements to the energy efficiency of their property, with little or no up-front cost. To be a Green Deal installer, contractors need to be certified by one of the certification bodies accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service.
Square Deal is being developed by local IT specialists, Radweb, who have recently re-launched the website. Steve Rad, manager of the scheme said; “Trading standards only select the best contractors to take part in the Green Deal scheme so having them all listed on Square Deal for Portsmouth makes perfect sense.”
He added; “In tough times no one can afford the risk of paying out for dodgy work only for it to need rectifying later, so people are making sure they choose their tradesmen more wisely than ever.”
The scheme is designed by the council to help protect Portsmouth residents from the dreaded ‘rip off merchants’. Since it began the scheme has become incredibly popular with the hotline receiving many calls every day from Portsmouth residents looking for approved and trusted businesses.
The councils Trading Standards have always supported the scheme and after incorporating the Green Deal contractors they are now looking for other ways to back Square Deal.
“Square Deal gives the people of Portsmouth the means to make informed purchasing decisions rather than sorting things out after they’ve gone wrong. It also allows quality tradesman and businesses a platform to show how well they work, display testimonials from happy customers and gives them a high level of local exposure,” added Steve.
Small businesses, tradesmen and contractors can join Square Deal for as little as £10 a month. When they sign up they are vetted, approved and monitored by the city council’s trading standards to ensure that customers get a great service.
Businesses that become members can enjoy a wide range of benefits including increased advertising, web-site assistance and a dedicated phone number, including statistics and tracking.
