Andrew Hawley of Vintage Rock Posters has announced his search Vintage 1950s and 1960s Dorton Arena Raleigh North Carolina Concert Posters. According to Hawley, “Raleigh is home to North Carolina State University and the state capital. The Dorton Arena was a mecca for great concerts back in the 1950's and 60's. In the 1950s, the Biggest Show of Stars came to Raleigh. Many top Motown acts also played the Dorton Arena and the Raleigh Memorial Coliseum. These shows often travelled under the name of Motortown Revue. These acts travelled by bus and would play night to night in different cities. Back then, the tops arts did not travel first class. In the 1960s, great rock n roll acts such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix performed at the legendary arena. A friend of Hawley's attended the April 1969 Jimi Hendrix show at The Dorton arena with Fat Mattress and took a poster from a local laundry mat. He said it was there before the show and remained there many days after the concert until he finally decided to take it down and hang it on his dorm room wall at NC State.”
Hawley continues, “Globe Posters produced many of the colorful posters that were used to advertise these shows. These posters were put in barbershop windows and local department stores to advertise the upcoming show. Most of the Globe posters were 22x28 inches and features a great photo of the band surrounded by very garish colors.”
