In addition to a recent financial donation, LJM and CTG are supporting the Mercy Home’s mission to equip young people for long-term success and self-reliance in a number of ways. The firms recently established an internship program for Mercy Home’s young people as well as former residents who are actively participating in its AfterCare program.
“Professional internships have the potential to be life-changing for our young people,” said Steve Ritzema, who manages the Career Resources program at Mercy Home. “Just having that experience of working in a professional environment, of interacting with responsible adults who show up every day and work hard—it can make all of the other things we do for our kids at Mercy Home really come together for the benefit and healing of the youth and help establish a clear direction for their lives,” Ritzema said.
Mercy Home for Boys & Girls offers a safe and stable place to live for young people who often come from chaotic, turbulent environments. In addition to short-term shelter, it prepares them for long-term stability by providing them with therapy to address significant traumas from their pasts, access to a quality education to help them overcome academic achievement gaps, and unique career opportunities, such as those offered by partners in the business community, to help them acquire marketable skills and develop responsible attitudes and life skills.
“The support that we enjoy from so many generous friends in the business community doesn't just help our young people,” said Mercy Home president Rev. L. Scott Donahue. “By sending kids like these out into the world better prepared to make a living and to contribute, and in fact to give back to others as so many of them do—that really helps the entire community, and we are so grateful for it,” Donahue said.
“It’s critical for the future success of our company that our youth is prepared to innovate and lead. Investing in our future starts with the children,” said CTG Vice-President Nell Sloane. Sloane added that additional programs will be added to its partnership with the home in the near future, including hands on teachings of Microsoft Basic, Data input, and Business Etiquette.
Lauren Caine, Director of Marketing for LJM said, “By providing real world experience and hands on training, we are enabling these young adults to take success into their own hands. This partnership aims to provide these youths the tools needed to make the first step into the professional environment, and then empowering these young adults to take control of their future.” Caine adds, “LJM has a long history of giving back to the community, but this is partnership is a unique opportunity for the entire LJM and CTG staff to participate in and witness making a difference in our community.”
