Lakeland, FL (PRWEB) April 08, 2013
Joey Chestnut won the Magnify Credit Union World Championship Ice Cream Eating Contest at the 1st Annual Florida Ice Cream Eating Festival, setting a new world record with 11 ½ pints (almost 1 ½ gallons) of vanilla ice cream in 6 minutes to claim the first place prize of $2,000.
The Florida Ice Cream Festival was a tremendous success. The first-time event, and the first of its kind held in Florida, attracted over 25,000 people.
“Our Lakeland community really showed us their support by coming out to our fun and affordable family event," said John Santarpia, President/CEO of Magnify Credit Union and founder of the event.
Other attendees traveled from the Tampa and Orlando areas to enjoy ice cream and food as well as entertainment. Performers included Chloe Tomlinson, Eva Kroon Pike, Madison Alexis, Plaid and Pearl, Natalie Hernandez and the Sofa Kings. In addition, attendees were also treated to ice-cream making demonstrations, exhibits from the Lakeland Fire Department and Polk County Sheriff’s office, amusements and arts & crafts.
“I felt really good with my 7,000 attendance projection, but 25,000+ attendees was a grand slam,” reported Sherrin Smyers, founder of Eventrics, the event coordinator.
The net proceeds from the festival will go to the Magnify Life Foundation, which supports financial literacy in Polk County Schools, the Detroit Tigers Foundation of Florida and many other worthy causes.
About the Florida Ice Cream Festival:
In 2008, Magnify Credit Union purchased land to build a new credit union branch. The land also included a Bruster’s Ice Cream shop. In 2009, Magnify completed the construction of Florida’s first zero-energy commercial building. The building was certified LEED Gold. Magnify incorporated the ice cream shop in its building design and cross marketing efforts have helped promote each business. After visiting a few other ice cream festivals around the country, Magnify Credit Union decided to create its own ice cream festival to raise funds for its foundation, the Magnify Life Foundation, a leader in environmental awareness, financial literacy, and community involvement. The event was held at Joker Marchant Stadium, home of the Detroit Tigers Spring Training. For more information, visit http://www.FloridaIceCreamFestival.org.
