Hill Country Conservancy, along with six other environmental non-profits, is encouraging the Central Texas community to eat, shop, play, and more to support the Fourth Annual “Give 5% to Mother Earth” campaign – taking place at over 200 local business locations all over Austin on Earth Day, April 22, 2013!

“Give 5% to Mother Earth” is a collaboration between Hill Country Conservancy, Texas Land Conservancy, TreeFolks, Friends of Barton Springs Pool, Austin Parks Foundation, Urban Roots, and Clean Water Fund. Local businesses have committed to donate five percent of gross sales on Earth Day to these non-profits that dedicate their time and energy to making Central Texas a better place.

“This year, the ‘Give 5’ campaign has simply grown to a new level,” said George Cofer, Executive Director of Hill Country Conservancy. “With the number of new businesses and sponsors involved, as well as additional non-profit beneficiaries, the campaign has become a significant source of funding for our environmental community, as well as a model for similar programs around the nation. Now we need Austin to help make the outcome this year bigger and better than ever!”

Green Mountain Energy Company is the Presenting Sponsor of the campaign this year. Green Mountain is the nation’s longest serving retailer of renewable energy and was founded on a mission to “change the way power is made.” The company is headquartered in Austin, and local leaders will gather for a Give 5 kick-off event in Green Mountain’s new office. The office was built with sustainable business practices including use of reclaimed material, comprehensive waste reduction and sub-metered energy use to increase awareness and control over energy consumption. The new office features and ongoing environmental sustainability practices were all factors in the company’s recent recognition by the City of Austin as a Platinum Level Austin Green Business Leader.

In its fourth year, the “Give 5% to Mother Earth” campaign has become a substantial source of annual fundraising for each beneficiary. Since inception, the campaign has doubled in size each year. In its entirety, the campaign has raised over $100,000 for environmental non-profits that work year round to better the local environment in multiple ways. By participating in this campaign, local business owners and the community are making a significant positive impact on the future of Austin’s natural resources.

Other sponsors of the campaign include Thundercloud Subs, Reagan Outdoor, Balcones Resources, Heritage Title, AT&T, Subaru of Austin, Enterprise, Silicon Labs, McCarthy Print, Christie and Bill Nalle, and Arts and Recreation.
