It has been reported in Electronics Weekly that “Anderson localisation” causes predictable behaviour in waves passing through random arrangements of tiny structures. Southampton researcher Dr Otto Muskens explains that “light bounces back and forth inside the material”, and that in the case of LEDs, “energy will build up and you will get local modes that start lasing. The more photons there are in a mode, the more chance there is that another will join them.” Muskens later goes on to explain that if successful, the process would “reduce the threshold for light emission.”
