Asbury Theological Seminary announces the appointment of a new Vice President for the Florida Dunnam Campus. Dr. Steve Gober brings two decades of experience in Christian higher education, most of that in a multi-cultural, bi-lingual setting. Gober arrived in Costa Rica in 1993 to teach in the Methodist Seminary in Costa Rica (Seminario Evangélico Metodista de Costa Rica), one of the premier theological training institutions in the country. By 1995 Dr. Gober became the Academic Dean of the seminary and in 2002 was named President of the seminary. Gober served as President until 2010 when he turned the leadership over to a national leader. It was in 2010 that Gober accepted a position as the Director of Operations and Spiritual Formation of Asbury Theological Seminary on the Florida Dunnam Campus. In 2012 Gober was named the interim Vice President of the campus.

Dr. Gober’s educational background reflects his deep understanding of the history and ethos of Asbury. Gober received his BA in 1988 from Asbury College, his Master of Divinity in 1993 from Asbury Theological Seminary and in 2010 he graduated with his DMin degree in Asbury’s Beeson program. Gober’s dissertation was entitled: Holistic Christian Formation for Enduring Leadership.

President Tennent established an extensive search process, bringing in candidates from around the country for consideration. An interview team, including Trustees, faculty and staff were utilized to carefully screen and interview each candidate. After an extensive search, the team unanimously recommended to Dr. Tennent that Steve Gober be selected for the position. Dr. Gober has also received a unanimous vote of affirmation from the School of Urban Ministries on the Florida Dunnam Campus as well as a unanimous vote from the Faculty Committee. Dr. Tennent, commented, “I am delighted that this process helped all of us see that Dr. Gober was the right choice for the Florida Dunnam Campus at this historic juncture in our history. Dr. Gober has already proved himself to be an effective leader of the campus. His decades of cross-cultural experience and linguistic abilities will bring important strengths to the President’s cabinet. Furthermore, his deep commitment to Wesleyan theology, his excellent communication skills, his knowledge of the global church, and his understanding of the challenges facing the church in the 21st century make him an excellent choice as we seek, by God’s grace, to be faithful to our 2023 Strategic Plan.” Dr. Gober will be formally installed in a service on the Florida Dunnam Campus on Thursday, April 18th with President Tennent and Provost Doug Matthews presiding.
