Green Apple Offers Four Top Summer Care Tips for Wood Floors

The renowned flooring supplier has outlined five things homeowners should bear in mind if they want to keep their wood floors in tip top condition throughout the summer.

Most of us love leaving all the windows open to make the most of the fresh summer air, yet doing so encourages mountains of dust.

The snow is subsiding and it seems summer is finally on its way! The team at Green Apple have put together a list of four tips that are a must-read for those who want to keep their wooden floors in top condition throughout the warmer, sunnier months (assuming that Britain’s weather returns to normal after last year’s erratic floods and snow, of course).

1.    Keep the sun off the surface of the floor where possible. Even though it can be tempting to let as much light enter the room as possible when the sky is at its brightest, the sun’s powerful rays can actually begin to discolour the floor over time. Be sure to make good use of appropriately-placed curtains and blinds to ensure the floor doesn’t lose its sheen.

2.    Most of us love leaving all the windows open to make the most of the fresh summer air, yet doing so encourages mountains of dust to accumulate on the floor. Sweep (and, where applicable, mop) the floor more frequently than in winter months to keep the surface clean and dust-free. The majority of oiled and lacquered wood floors can also be carefully vacuumed. We’d always recommend checking the manufacturer’s guidelines and/or discussing the best maintenance options with an expert flooring supplier to avoid damaging the floor with ill-suited cleaning products.

3.    Most families love dusting off their walking boots and heading down to the local park while the weather’s fine. However, to keep the floor free from scuffs, scratches, scrapes and other unattractive marks, be sure to sweep up dirt, leaves and other outdoor debris as soon as they enter the room. A quick brush with a soft broom will prevent this pesky debris from being dragged along the floor and causing more damage elsewhere.

4.    Wood expands when the temperature and humidity levels of any home environment are on the rise. To combat rising moisture levels and avoid cupping and other inconsistencies in the floor as a result of expansion, try and keep the room air-conditioned and keep humidity levels as constant as possible throughout all seasons.
