Green Apple Relieved After Axminster Carpets’ Recent Brush with the Administrators

The flooring firm has responded to news that Axminster Carpets has been sold after entering administration in March.

"It’s encouraging to hear that various parties are willing to fight to secure the fate of such important firms"

The staff at Green Apple were horrified when they learned of the news that well-known West Country carpet manufacturer was forced to lay off three quarters of its workforce after it was sold as a going concern to administrators Duff & Phelps last month.

Axminster Carpets is arguably one of the most iconic brands to emerge from Britain’s south coast. As a firm that can trace its origins all the way back to 1755, Axminster has been supplying numerous luxurious, tapestry-style carpets to homeowners for centuries and even produced their renowned Axminster carpets for King George III, who visited the factory during his reign. The company employed approximately 400 staff at its premises in Devon prior to announcing redundancies and was one of the leading contributors to the region’s economy.

Though things initially looked bleak for the firm after its struggles were announced to the media several month ago, Axminster Carpets was eventually bought by a private investor last week and reopened yesterday, much to the delight of the nationwide home improvement industry. As a representative from Green Apple Flooring explains, securing the future of such a well-established business is crucial if other retailers are to continue to prosper.

“Our economy is only just beginning to pick up after a disastrous couple of years. It’s been a challenging time for the home improvement market, despite the fact that many homeowners have decided to stay put and work on improving their current properties instead of moving elsewhere. If some of our best-loved brands can’t survive these difficult times, what hope do smaller, lesser-known companies have?” he says. “However, it’s encouraging to hear that various parties are willing to fight to secure the fate of such important firms and the reopening of Axminster Carpets is a huge relief to other manufacturers and retailers across the country.”

Green Apple Flooring supplies an extensive range of solid wood flooring, engineered and laminate flooring to the UK. The company is proud to stock flooring and maintenance products from some of the best-known flooring brands in Europe, including Quickstep and Elka, at extremely competitive prices.
