After being introduced to Spartan Race on Facebook by a friend, Jonathan Shifflet decided to turn his life around and began training for Spartan Races.

On April 10, Spartan Race congratulates Jonathan Shifflet for proving that he is Spartan Strong by training for and completing the Texas Beast race.

According to the Spartan blog, Jonathan Shifflet was sitting at his computer, browsing on Facebook and smoking a cigarette when he noticed one of his friends liked the Spartan Race page. Shifflet weighed 240 pounds at the time and was smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. After seeing the Spartan Race page on Facebook, Shifflet visited the Spartan Race website. “I felt a part of me that I thought was gone waking up inside me. My urge my desire and my passion for fitness that I hadn’t felt since high school came back,” Shifflet says.

Two weeks later Shifflet quit smoking and subscribed the Spartan Race Workout of the Day (WOD). Shifflet had no experience in obstacle course racing or mud running, so he knew he had a lot of work ahead of him. After his first WOD, Shifflet says “I coughed, I puked and I felt beaten.”

The Spartan blog goes on to mention how Shifflet didn’t give up, and gradually saw improvement as he continued completing the WODs. Eventually, he was ready to compete in the Spartan Beast in Glen Rose, Texas.

Shifflet completed the Spartan Beast in 5 hours and 28 minutes. He considers it one of the hardest challenges of his life, and thanks Spartan Race for helping him quit smoking and get back in shape. “Spartan Race helped me accomplish so much. I didn’t know a better way to thank you than this; the logo is now tattooed into my shoulder!” Shifflet is not finished, however - he plans to run the Spartan Death Race in 2014.

Joe DeSena, founder of Spartan Race, commented on Jonathan Shifflet’s story. “It’s wonderful to hear that Spartan Race has helped Jonathan improve his fitness and make healthier life decisions. It’s a great feeling when someone credits your organization for helping them turn their life around.”
