Digital media simulations deliver scalable, authentic experiential learning with integrated assessments

This innovative game tool will motivate and increase student participation in science courses...I am excited to teach because this tool makes it interesting for the facilitator.

Toolwire (http://www.toolwire.com), a leading provider of digital media simulations (LearnScapes and GameScapes), announced today that it has been named a finalist in the “Learning Infrastructure” category for the Return on Education (ROE) Innovation Awards presented by Arizona State University, GSV Advisors, and the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation. Other finalists for this award include organizations such as Coursera, EdX, Chegg, Knewton, Khan Academy, and Florida Virtual School.

The prestigious ROE Innovation Awards recognize organizations that exemplify high impact and Return on Education as measured by their ability to deliver one or more of the following tangible learner outcomes:

  • Significantly increase access to education
  • Greatly reduce the cost for learners and/or learning institutions
  • Dramatically improve learning outcomes
  • Provide substantial leverage to learning leaders (teachers, professors)
  • Make a sustainable and scaled impact

Toolwire’s digital media simulations significantly increase student access to much needed experiential learning opportunities. Traditional experiential learning approaches (trips, speakers, internships etc) are typically hard to scale, hard to assess, and can be costly. As a result, many educational courses (even MOOCs – Massively Open Online Courses) are dominated by teacher-centered lectures and assessment approaches that can be disconnected from the learning process.

Toolwire’s digital simulations were developed to complement these courses by providing students with access to authentic, photo-realistic experiences with integrated “Natural Assessments” at a massive scale. In 2011 and 2012, Toolwire delivered almost 7 million LearnScape assessments to students and supported over 303 million minutes of student use. For its latest generation GameScapes, Toolwire recorded over 52 million minutes of student usage in January and February 2013.

Built upon a sophisticated Run Time Engine designed for adaptive delivery of learning content, GameScapes are story-based personalized learning journeys that challenge students to gather knowledge mapped to learning objectives from course textbooks. For instructors, these games collect rich data on student behavior and responses for assessment and feedback. For students, a point system tracks performance and fosters competition and motivation.

GameScapes are designed to help institutions cut costs by improving student engagement and retention. Together with Jones & Bartlett Learning (JBL), Toolwire is developing several GameScapes for first year courses (where over half of all dropouts occur). Jones & Bartlett Navigate Scenario: GameScapes for Health & Wellness and Psychology are now available for purchase. These GameScapes combine JBL’s authoritative content and subject matter expertise with Toolwire’s skill in the art of storytelling, studio capabilities, and digital media production. For a minimal auxiliary fee, instructors can easily plug GameScapes into existing courses.

The reaction to GameScapes by learning leaders has been extremely positive. Of the Health & Wellness GameScape, one instructor commented, "Great tool for engaging students. The assessment report is extremely helpful." Another instructor commented, "This innovative game tool will motivate and increase student participation in the science courses. I, too, will enjoy facilitating courses. I am excited to teach because this tool makes it interesting for the facilitator."
