After losing her husband in a motorcycle accident, Laura Stokes turned her life around by becoming a personal trainer and competing in a Spartan Race.

On April 18, Spartan Race commends Laura Stokes and her team of fellow Spartan Racers, including her son Jacob, for overcoming tragedy by completing a Spartan Race in honor of Laura’s deceased husband.

According to the Spartan blog, Laura Stokes was left to raise her two young sons when her husband Kade was killed in a motorcycle accident. Laura first felt weak and alone, but she was able to turn her life around by becoming a personal trainer and competing in the Spartan Race in Conyers, Georgia with her son Jacob, some of her husband’s friends, and a neighbor.

Besides helping her transform her body physically, Stokes believes that the Spartan Race played a role in the transformation of her emotional mindset. “We all came to the race with different obstacles we were facing in our lives, but we all crossed the finish line and proved something to ourselves. As for me and my Jacob, we are hooked. The training and the race was an awesome mother-son bonding experience. It has given us something positive to focus on and prepare for.” Stokes and her son plan on completing the Spartan Trifecta this year by racing in the Spartan Super in Leesburg, VA and the Spartan Beast in Winnsboro, SC.

Joe De Sena, founder of Spartan Race, commends Laura Stokes for her spirit and toughness. “It’s great to see a family be able to turn around from such a tragic event. Some may look at it as just a run through some mud and obstacles, but the Spartan Race is so much more. It has the power to bring people closer together and help them overcome obstacles in their personal lives.”

Spartan Race, voted Outside Magazine’s Best Obstacle Race in 2012, is the world’s leading obstacle race series and the first of its kind to have global rankings. Spartan Race is a timed event series featuring races at three escalating distances in locations worldwide that culminate in a World Championship Finale with cash and prizes for the champions. While featuring competitive elite heats, Spartan Races are for athletes of all levels and abilities and are geared towards ripping people off their couches and into the outdoors.
