Eclipse Web Media has posted the full videos of the Big Data Week 2013 Kickoff Event. The event featured presentations from the New York Times' Steve Lohr, and Datanami's Nicole Hemsoth.
The Kickoff Event's keynote was from Marty Cetron, the Director for the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Marty Cetron highlighted in his keynote about globalization and the effects it has on public health.
"We're living in a very globalized society. This represents a new paradigm of thinking about what that means to deal with threats and protecting the public."
Dr. Cetron discussed the evolution of Big Data and how we can now mine that data. One of his examples was by showing a USGS map of wild bird migrations to track potential bird flu outbreaks.
The Kickoff Event also had panel discussions about big data in security and business settings. Panelists included Thomas Madden (Chief Information Security Officer of the CDC), Joseph Guerrisi (VP Corporate Marketing of UPS), Robert Candelmo (SVP, Corporate Functions Relationship Executive of SunTrust) and William VanCuren (CIO of NCR).
