Vivid Learning Systems, a leading eLearning safety solutions provider announced that the company will offer a complimentary access to their Driver Safety eLearning course to the public in support of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This is one of the many efforts under Vivid Learning Systems’ Stewards of Safety™ workplace safety awareness initiative.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Facts and Statistics, each day more than 9 people are killed and more than 1,060 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. National Distracted Driving Awareness Month was introduced as a resolution by former Rep. Betsy Markey (D-CO) and passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in a 410-2 vote on March 23, 2010. The resolution mentions 9-year-old Erica Forney, who was struck and killed by a distracted driver in Fort Collins, CO, in November 2008. Erica’s mother, Shelley Forney, is a founding board member of FocusDriven – Advocates for Cell-Free Driving.

How big is the problem?

  • In 2011, approximately 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 3,267 in 2010.
  • Approximately 387,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver in 2011, compared to 416,000 injured in 2010.
  • In 2010, nearly one in five crashes (18%) in which someone was injured involved distracted driving.
