A new report has been published by Thumbtack Technology, a leading software development services firm that specializes in building and integrating scalable applications and systems for Fortune 500 clients and startups. In conjunction with the report published a few months ago entitled, “Ultra-High Performance NoSQL Benchmarking: Analyzing Durability and Performance Tradeoffs,” Thumbtack’s latest study focuses on how NoSQL databases perform during hardware failures. The new report, entitled "NoSQL Failover Characteristics: Aerospike, Cassandra, Couchbase, and MongoDB,” explores how major NoSQL databases handle and recover from failure conditions, and discusses what this means in terms of data durability and capacity planning.
“All the major distributed NoSQL databases advertise their redundancy and ability to handle failures in a transparent way,” said Ben Engber, CEO and founder of Thumbtack Technology. “We wanted to see how these claims stacked up in reality, and what the implications of such behaviors are when determining system capacity and dealing with potential data loss.”
In this paper, Thumbtack examined one of the main reasons for using a NoSQL database — the ability to continue processing transactions in the face of hardware or other node failures. Taking the same suite of databases from the first study and simulating a variety of failure conditions under different levels of load, the report looked at how failure events affected the performance of the system as a whole.
The databases tested for this report were the following: Aerospike, Cassandra, Couchbase, and MongoDB. Thumbtack once again used their customized version of the Yahoo Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB) as the basis for the test, and the conclusions supplement those of the prior report. The intended audience are technical decision makers looking to get a more detailed understanding in preparation for choosing and deploying NoSQL in their own environments.
