La Peer Health Systems is pleased to announce the launch of the Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence, a sub-division of our Beverly Hills surgery center devoted to the comprehensive treatment of hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive and unpredictable sweating, often affecting localized regions of the body such as the hands, feet, or armpits. Though it is estimated that up to three percent of the population suffers from excessive sweating, most people aren't familiar with hyperhidrosis or the fact that their condition is highly treatable.

“For most patients with hyperhidrosis, the social and psychological impact of their condition is the most frustrating,” explained Dr. Mahtabifard, thoracic surgeon and co-director of the Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence. “Our goal is to provide cutting-edge treatments and individualized care to ensure our patients receive effective and lasting results.”

Surgeons at the Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence are using one such treatment, known as a thoracoscopic sympathectomy, to resolve excessive sweating at its source. The surgeon makes two tiny incisions on the side of the chest and through these incisions. A small camera is inserted as well as a second device, which is used to cut a section of the nerves known to be responsible for excessive sweating. This minimally invasive approach offers patients immediate relief from sweating with very little downtime.

Since the procedure requires advanced technical skill in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, it’s best left to a thoracic surgeon. The Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence boasts two fellowship trained thoracic surgeons with years of experience performing hyperhidrosis surgery.

“When performed by an experienced thoracic surgeon, the risks of thoracoscopic sympathectomy are relatively small and the benefits can be absolutely life-changing,” said Dr. Fuller, co-director of the Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence.

Patients who are not good candidates for hyperhidrosis surgery or prefer to begin with a more conservative therapy have plenty of options at the Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence. Alternative treatments, including oral and topical medications, Botox, acupuncture, and iontophoresis are generally less effective than surgery but may be beneficial in certain cases.

The Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence is directed by two board-certified thoracic surgeons, Ali Mahtabifard, MD and Clark Fuller, MD. Both surgeons are leading experts in the field of minimally invasive thoracic surgery, with extensive experience in the comprehensive management and advanced surgical care of hyperhidrosis.
