The NFL is accused of consciously deceiving players about the long–term health risks of concussions.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) April 11, 2013
Ira Sherman, founding partner of Washington D.C. law firm, Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata, & Siegel, P.C., was recently quoted in Washington Lawyer’s Magazine cover story, “Playing it Safe-Are Concussions Ruining Sports?” The article examines recent NFL litigation, and the link between recurring head injuries and health issues among National Football League (NFL) players.
According to the article, the NFL is accused of consciously deceiving players about the long–term health risks of concussions. The players are blaming their medical problems, such as incapacitating dementia, insomnia, and depression, on head injuries suffered on the football field. The NFL says it is working to promote player safety.
“The NFL litigation brings awareness to repetitive professional sports injuries all the way down to children playing,” said Washington D.C. brain injury lawyer Ira Sherman. “Depending on the outcome of the class action lawsuit, there may be a greater duty on the individuals operating the activities to require them to be cognizant of the individuals playing.”
According to research by the University of Pittsburgh’s Brain Trauma Research Center, there are more than 300,000 concussion related sports injuries in the United States each year. There are also reported links of head trauma injuries with degenerative brain disease causing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). People with CTE can suffer from dementia, impulsivity, forgetfulness, depression, insomnia, and suicidal tendencies.
