United Nations Foundation Announces New Campaign Director

Melissa Hillebrenner to lead Girl Up.

The United Nations Foundation today announced the appointment of Melissa Hillebrenner as Director of Girl Up, a campaign that mobilizes American girls to raise awareness and funds for UN programs that provide girls around the world with life-changing opportunities such as the chance to go to school, see a doctor, and stay safe from violence.

As the new Director of Girl Up, Hillebrenner will lead a campaign that empowers American girls to advocate on behalf of girls around the world through online engagement and community mobilization. Through its teen advisory board, network of Girl Up Clubs, and online constituents, Girl Up has galvanized more than 300,000 supporters to stand up for the rights of girls everywhere. A healthy, educated, empowered adolescent girl has the unique potential to break the cycle of poverty for herself, her family, and her country.

“Girls have the potential to change the world, but they often don’t have the chance.” says Kathy Calvin, President and CEO of the UN Foundation. “That’s why the UN Foundation launched the Girl Up campaign - to give people the chance to empower girls everywhere. Now at the helm of the campaign, Melissa brings a combination of knowledge and dedication to supporting girls and women around the world. We are confident that she will lead the campaign to continued success this year and beyond.”

“I feel privileged to work with an amazing group of teen girls who are motivated to raise awareness and take action on behalf of girls around the world – girls that they may never meet. But beyond teen girls, people of all ages across the country are taking action, whether it’s through texting, tweeting, lobbying their members of Congress, or starting Girl Up Clubs in their communities,” says Hillebrenner, the new Director of Girl Up. “Working with key partners and supporters, Girl Up will keep strengthening the movement to recognize the rights of girls around the world, enabling them to realize their full potential.”

Before becoming Director of Girl Up, Hillebrenner served as Deputy Director of the campaign. During the year and a half that she has helped lead Girl Up, the campaign has grown to more than 300,000 supporters and more than 300 Girl Up Clubs around the world. Prior to joining the UN Foundation, Hillebrenner served as a National Director for OP3, where she managed the nine-city multi-day fundraising walk series benefiting the Avon Foundation for Women, which raised an average of $45 million each season. During her tenure with the Avon Walks, she oversaw national staff and remote field teams, and introduced a program called the Youth Crew, which targets youth ages 10-16 to participate in the walk and raise money for the Avon Foundation. Hillebrenner believes that girls everywhere have the power to build a better world.
