Nearly 1,000 of an Oklahoma dentist's patients have tested positive for hepatitis B and C as well as HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. According to an April 1 Associated Press news report, officials believe that about 7,000 patients who had dental work done at W. Scott Harrington's clinics could be infected.

The Tulsa County District Attorney's office is looking into filing criminal charges against W. Scott Harrington, a dentist whose two allegedly unsanitary clinics, officials say, may have infected thousands of patients with hepatitis B and C as well as HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. According to an April 1 Associated Press news report, nearly 1,000 of Harrington's 7,000 patients have now tested positive for hepatitis B and C as well as HIV. The state offered free testing for Harrington's patients and more than 1,000 showed up just within the first two days, the report states.

Officials say they are looking for witnesses and individuals who can testify against Harrington, AP reports. Investigators allegedly found rusty instruments, potentially contaminated drug vials and improper use of a machine designed to sterilize tools at two of the dentist's Tulsa-area clinics, the report states.

Officials also allege that dental assistants performed some tasks reserved for a licensed dentist, such as administrating intravenous sedation, AP reports. No charges have been filed yet as the investigation is still ongoing, according to the article. Officials started alerting the public after one of Harrington's patients initially tested positive for HIV and hepatitis C in a screening at a third-party provider, the report states.

New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm said his heart goes out to all these patients who are finding out that they have been infected with potentially deadly diseases. "I can only imagine what these individuals and their families are going through – the emotional trauma and the stress they have been put under through no fault of their own."

These patients and their families deserve answers, Wilhelm said. "The consequences of medical negligence often prove to be devastating for victims. Every patient at a doctor's office or dentist's office has the right to quality care. It is important for an injured victim to well understand his or her legal rights."
