Scouts learn to cook soup

We did this because it was on a cold night and we thought that we would help the elderly people in Whittingham to keep warm.

Cubs from the 1st Whittingham BP Scout Group learned how to make soup and then delivered it to some of the village’s vulnerable older people as part of their Citizenship badge.

10-year-old Kate Elizabeth Renner explains: “In Cubs we made some soup, there were two soups that we made. They were called, broccoli and stilton and carrot and coriander. We did this because it was on a cold night and we thought that we would help the elderly people in Whittingham to keep warm. So, we made some soup for them so they don't have to cook something warm. Also that was part of our Citizenship badge. I think everyone felt good about themselves and enjoyed helping."

Antje Hall, aged 9, adds: “Even though it was a bit cold, muddy and dark, it was good to see the older people in the village. I hope they enjoyed the soup! “

Village resident, Penelope Bayley was delighted when a group of happy Cubs came calling with home-made soup. “I chose which flavour I’d prefer and they delved in their bag until they found it, then handed it over with such pride. The soup was delicious and all the better for having been given with love.”

The 1st Whittingham BP Scout Group is part of the Localgiving.com online fundraising platform for small, local charities and groups. They have raised over £5,000 through online donations in the past year. Group Scout Master, Ninette Gray, says: “We really appreciate the fundraising opportunities available through Localgiving.com. It really does enable us to give the best possible opportunities to the children in our scout group. The confidence and skills that the children gain through scouting can really expand their horizons and change their lives.”
