Potential parents see them as risky. But they need the love more than any other child and typically they thrive in a stable household.

Actress and writer Nia Vardalos, who created and starred in the hit romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding, spoke this week for the first time about her struggles with infertility and the adoption of her daughter. Local attorney Gary Iscoe, who champions the rights of neglected and abused children, believes Vardalos' story will help draw public attention and support for such adoption cases.
Vardalos, who recently authored the book Instant Mom about her struggles, underwent in vitro fertilization treatments no less than 13 times before she and her husband decided on adoption. In an interview Tuesday, Vardalos said they chose to adopt a daughter who came from a background of abuse and neglect – and were not sure what they were getting themselves into.
Iscoe, whose firm Steinger, Iscoe and Greene represents the victims of many child sex abuse cases, says that children who come from such backgrounds face stigma in adoption.
“It adds one more obstacle to already painful lives,” Iscoe said. “Potential parents see them as risky. But they need the love more than any other child and typically they thrive in a stable household.”
Vardalos said that within six months, her newly adopted daughter was like any other little girl.
“Our firm works actively to help children who need protection,” Steinger said. “We do pro bono work for many such cases through Guardian Ad Litem, and we sponsor fundraisers for that cause such as Speak Up for Kids. But foster parents and adoptive parents will always be the ones to make the biggest impact.”
