With NoviVisor, NoviFlow is bringing the benefits of virtualization into the very heart of the network fabric itself, adding the last missing element in the complete virtualization of data centers: the virtualized network data plane.
SUNNYVALE, Calif. (PRWEB) April 15, 2013
At the Open Networking Summit 2013, NoviFlow Inc. will introduce the industry’s first high-performance virtualization technology for network processors, NoviVisor®. NoviVisor is a hypervisor, or virtual machine manager, that allows multiple applications to share a single network processor. NoviVisor brings the benefits of virtualization and programmability to the switching fabric of high-performance data centers and makes NoviFlow the first company to offer Network Function Virtualization (NFV) on network processors.
“The major benefits that virtualization has brought to the compute resources of the data center are universally recognized, but until today network switches and other high-performance network devices have been denied the benefits of virtualization. With NoviVisor this is no longer the case,” said Dominique Jodoin, president and chief executive officer of NoviFlow Inc. “With NoviVisor, NoviFlow is bringing the benefits of virtualization into the very heart of the network fabric itself, adding the last missing element in the complete virtualization of data centers: the virtualized network data plane.”
By virtualizing the network data plane, large data center operators can now deploy the business logic for network applications on low cost, general-purpose processors while executing data handling logic on high-performance network processors. This combination enables operators to enjoy the benefits of network virtualization while optimizing cost performance in network applications.
"Virtualization will fundamentally change the economics of networking itself, just as it has revolutionized network computing. When combined with the OpenFlow™ protocol and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), these innovative technologies have the potential to unleash the full power of Software-Defined Networking (SDN)," said Dan Pitt, executive director of the Open Networking Foundation. "We are pleased to see the continuous efforts by our member companies to innovate and accelerate the creation and adoption of these standards, which bring the benefits of SDN solutions directly to users."
NoviVisor is a hypervisor specifically designed to enable commercial grade high-performance virtualized switching and network function solutions. It provides all the benefits of virtualization to network devices. The benefits of NoviVisor include:
Reduced OPEX: Simplified operations
•Transparent scalability, elasticity and multi-homing for each virtual instance
o Easy resource allocation for switches and Virtual Network Entities (VNEs):
- Multiple virtual instances on a single physical switch
- Virtual instances spanning multiple physical switches
o Dynamically allocate and combine physical switch resources as usage grows
o Bandwidth, QoS, SLA enforcement for service providers
- Reduced costs for provisioning, management and support
o Dynamic resource and traffic allocation upon changes in equipment
- Fault tolerance and security
o Virtual instances are completely isolated in hardware: failures in one instance will not impact other instances running on the same physical switch
o Data plane traffic is completely isolated in its own instances: no possibility for packet “sniffing” between instances
o DDoS attacks on one virtual element will have no impact on the others
- Easy migration of services within and between data centers
Lower CAPEX: Higher device utilization with less over-provisioning
- Manage all switch hardware resources as a single large pool
- Transparent traffic aggregation and load balancing
- Virtual instance resource allocation across physical switch boundaries
- Shared resource allocation and scheduling
- Share memory, CPU, flow tables
- Sharing of physical switch resource between instances
(e.g. port sharing)
NoviVisor will be launched in NoviFlow switching products in the third quarter of 2013, and will be available for OEM licensing in the same timeframe. For more information please visit NoviFlow in booth #406 at the Open Networking Summit, April 15th-17th, 2013 or see: http://www.noviflow.com
About NoviFlow Inc.
NoviFlow Inc. provides high-performance OpenFlow-based switching solutions to data centers and network operators seeking greater control and flexibility over their networks. In December 2012 NoviFlow launched the world’s first high performance OpenFlow 1.1 switch, the NoviKit 100, and was listed by Business Insider as one of the eight SDN startups to watch in 2013. The company was incorporated in early 2012 and was the first Canadian company to join the Open Networking Foundation (ONF). NoviFlow has offices in Sunnyvale, Montreal, and Seattle.
