Altanta, GA (PRWEB) April 16, 2013
The Scott Rigsby Foundation is proud to announce the addition of the Greater Atlanta Veteran Hiring Expo as part of its fourth annual Alliance Ride (http://www.allianceride.com) in support of our military heroes and their families as they transition back into their communities.
On May 3rd, 2013, Atlanta area businesses will come together to honor veterans by participating in the inaugural Greater Atlanta Veteran Hiring Expo, known as Invest In Our Vets. The event will take place at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater at Encore Park in Alpharetta, GA from noon-5pm and will include employers seeking full-time applicants as well as those offering internship opportunities. A computer lab will be available for job seeking veterans to prepare resumes, and workshops will be offered covering topics such as career planning and employability skills.
Georgia has more than 700,000 veterans, and many are struggling to find work, according to state officials. U.S. labor officials estimate the military discharges 300,000 active service members and 11,000 reserve and National Guard members annually. Warriors returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are facing the bleakest of situations compared to all veterans 18 and older, with unemployment at 12.1%.
Invest in Our Vets is an opportunity for veterans and employers to meet and conduct interviews onsite. The event will also benefit from the services and resources of partner agencies including The GA Department of Labor, The Department of Veterans Affairs, The GA Department of Veterans Service, local Workforce Investment Areas, Employment Services for Guard and Reserve and others.
“We are fully committed to helping our warriors and their families,” said Scott Johnson, Executive Director of The Scott Rigsby Foundation. “The Invest in Our Veterans model encourages Atlanta area businesses to hire or provide training and internship programs for veterans while recognizing tax breaks and lower employment cost incentives.”
Invest in Our Vets is a partnership effort including the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, City of Alpharetta, The Scott Rigsby Foundation, Jackson Healthcare, the Georgia Department of Labor and Georgia National Guard. “The GNFCC is excited about the coming together of businesses in North Fulton to provide real jobs for true heroes,” states Deborah Lanham, Director of Member Services of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce. “This will be a serious team effort demonstrating the desire of our business community to support and invest in Georgia Veterans.”
Employers interested in taking part should contact Stanley Johnson of the Department of Labor at 404-232-3584 or Stanley.Johnson(at)gdol(dot)ga(dot)gov or Deborah Lanham of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce at DLanham(at)gnfcc(dot)com. Veterans seeking employment and education opportunities are encouraged to arrive by 11:30am and register at the event.
About The Scott Rigsby Foundation
The foundation’s namesake, Scott Rigsby, set a world record at the IRONMAN World Championship, becoming the first double below-the-knee amputee using prosthetics to finish the event. As if that wasn’t enough to inspire people around the world, Rigsby formed The Scott Rigsby Foundation to help warriors and individuals with physical challenges to “Do the Unthinkable” in their own lives.
The Scott Rigsby Foundation (SRF) is a non-profit 501-(c)3 organization dedicated to inspire, inform and enable individuals with loss of limb or mobility to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
The SRF’s primary objective is to promote the health and fitness of physically challenged individuals by providing resources for prosthetic and orthotics products, while advancing prosthetic technology and access to personal support care networks. Through this process, the foundation hopes to inspire thousands of able-bodied adults and youth to pursue better health and wellness as a means of preventing loss of limb and mobility.
