The American Quilter’s Society, headquartered in Paducah, KY, presents AQS QuiltWeek™ in Paducah, KY, from April 24 – 27, 2013. More than 30,000 will converge upon Quilt City USA®, the home of The National Quilt Museum, to enjoy a week surrounded by the best in international quilt and textile artistry. More than 570 quilts will be on display across three locations, with even more throughout the town at AQS sanctioned events.
By offering more than $120,000 in cash prizes in its contest, AQS QuiltWeek has raised the profile of quilting on an international scale. Now in its 29th year, the quality and diversity of entries in the competition continue to raise the bar for fiber artists. Of the 402 semifinalists competing in the 2013 contest, eight countries join with forty-three U.S. states in competition for cash awards and the prestige associated with winning honors in Paducah.
Each of the semifinalists in the 2013 contest inspire beginner and advanced quilters alike with their skill and artistic talent. Within each of the fifteen categories of competition, up to $3,250 will be shared among the top three winners. First Place quilts in most groups will earn $1,500 in cash. Many winners will earn even larger cash prizes.
The prestigious contest also awards nine major prizes over and above the individual categories. Six awards not only receive prize money, they also become part of the permanent collection in The National Quilt Museum. The Janome Best of Show will receive $20,000; The AQS Hand Workmanship, BERNINA Machine Workmanship, and APQS Longarm Machine Quilting awards come with a purse of $12,000 each. Also added to The National Quilt Museum are the winners of the Moda Best Wall prize ($5,000) and Benartex Best Miniature ($3,000). Rounding out the cash prizes with $3,000 each are the Coats & Clark Wall Hand Workmanship, Brother Wall Machine Workmanship, and Handi Quilter Wall Longarm Machine Quilting awards.
Winners won’t be selected or announced until April 23, 2013 at the AQS QuiltWeek awards presentation. Only those with tickets to the awards presentation and the preview night will see the winners before the show opening. Each AQS Quilt Contest includes only juried entries, with final judging by professional quilt judges.
